If you want to get the password for a installation package, download the Nullsoft package (its free) and study how its implementing the input of the password and then uses a debugger on the API calls.

Honestly I think hes right, nobody would write such a general program, but everyone who is interested in reversing a nsis package should examinate the sources and understand how the installer is done.

Well, the only thing that you should discover is the registry andor config files modifications during the install process, because the files that are copied are clearly available to you after a complete installation, isnt it So heres what Id do, if I were you: I would extract all files simply installing the program on my HD; then Id take trace of all config changes made during installation, including new or modified registry keys; finally I would use myself the NSIS installer package to re-package everything.

But it wont handle protected files, especially since NSIS is open source and even contains a comment describing the lines you need to change to make an unpackers life harder.

But if you take the source, a debugger, and a disassembler, it might be possible to unpack the file.

Ive done chmod x on the file and tried to run it like a script with no luck (it gives me an error that theres no such file or directory.

Whats interesting is that this worked for me when I was running Linux Mint 14 (64 bit).

I found an article that mentions glibc support and how newer distributions have removed 32 bit glibc binaries but Im not quite sure if this is accurate in my case since Im not running RHEL.

Figures, the one binary I didnt try to extract it ends up working:).

I guess I was confused as to why my old way didnt work anymore.

Your answer came up for review, I had not heard of that, Googled and found that reference on wikipedia.

So it seems there are multiple formats and I dont think you can use your solution if you have SFX file created for Windows.

BTW this uncompresses to something only 1 bigger than the SFX file.

If Im not mistaken, on Windows RAR splits files into parts having the first one to be an executable (exe).

But, at least for certain SFX archives, the method mentioned above works on Linux (at least Debian).

I just did not want to risk running such a unknown executable for which I have not seen the source on my system.
